Walking at the same speed as strangers
14th January 2011
Isn’t it awkward when you start walking at exactly the same speed and right next to a stranger when you’re walking down the street? Usually when your both in a rush and neither of you want to concede. Do you speed up and look obvious as you awkwardly fail in conquering the ‘urgent walk’ or the ‘half-run’? Or do you throw in the towel and slow down?
Next time you find yourself in this testing situation simply take a handful of cornflakes from a small bag stowed in a convenient coat pocket for exactly this problem. With a sudden and deliberate motion, scatter the cornflakes immediately onto the path in front of your adversary and continue at exactly the same walking pace and continue like nothing has happened.
Rest assured the ensuing shock, confusion or even panic will slow your enemy up enough for you to get a couple of paces advantage. If your lucky, your opponent might even stop completely, walk round the obstacle, try to pick their way through the cornflake minefield at a drastically slower pace or just stare on in disbelief at you as you rapidly storm into the lead. Its probable you have won the day as its unlikely even the most determined competitor will break into a run to catch you up.
